Pope Francis has declared
Sunday 17 November 2024 to be the eighth World Day of the Poor,
with the theme of “The prayer of the poor rises up to God."
The expression that gives the 2024 World Day of the Poor its theme is taken from the Book of Sirach (cf.Sir21:5),
which Pope Francis says is not sufficiently known and deserves to be discovered for the richness of its themes.
In his message for this World Day of the Poor,
the Holy Father reiterates
that "the poor hold a privileged place in God’s heart"and invites everyone to learn to pray for the poor
and to pray together with the poor, with humility and trust.
Lord Alton of Liverpool, former MP and Christian campaigner writes,
I am getting in touch regarding the upcoming vote on Kim Leadbeater's Assisted Suicide Bill
on Friday 29th November.
Our nation stands on the brink of a major change in how we treat human life,
particularly the lives of the most vulnerable.
If this radical proposal to introduce assisted suicide passes, thousands of vulnerable lives will be at risk over the coming years.
Mounting evidence from the small number of places around the world that have legalised assisted suicide
shows that these Laws are incremental, that safeguards do not work, and that the changed law can have devasting consequences.
It is therefore vital that this Assisted Suicide Bill is defeated on Friday 29th November.
I have spoken to several MPs and colleagues agree that one of the most effective ways to urge MPs to
oppose this dangerous Bill is through physical letters or postcards from constituents
asking them to vote"no" to the Bill.
This is borne out from my own experience, serving in both Houses of Parliament over the
past four decades.
Not Dead Yet UK, a network of people with disabilities who oppose legalising assisted suicide, has helped
in having the enclosed postcards printed and distributed throughout the UK. These postcards present
evidence-based reasons to oppose assisted suicide, urging MPs to vote against the Bill on 29th November.
In just a few weeks, MPs will debate and vote on assisted suicide legislation.
I wrote to you a few weeks ago about this and encouraged you to make your voice heard, and I know many of you have done so.
A huge thanks if you have emailed, written, or even visited your MP;
it will make a difference. Since I last wrote, there have been some positive developments.
The Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, has changed his mind on this issue and pledged to vote against a change in the law.
He fears that people would not have a genuine ‘choice’ when palliative care isn’t fully resourced.
Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is also opposed.
This means that two Ministers who’d be responsible for implementing an assisted suicide law will use their influence to resist it.
I’ve been similarly encouraged by events in Wales.
On 23 October, the Welsh Parliament—the Senedd—debated a motion calling for assisted dying.
This motion was rejected. Any move to legalise assisted suicide at Westminster will, therefore, be against the wishes of the Welsh Parliament.
Such an imposition would be highly controversial.
There is still time to write to MPs and ask them to oppose Kim Leadbeater’s Bill.
If you haven’t done this, can we encourage you to make use of our online tool today?
If you have, perhaps you could forward this email to a Christian friend.
I include some instructions on how to maximise your engagement with your MP below.
You can make a real difference.
I know that for some of us, the prospect of assisted suicide might feel like an inevitability.
But we have seen God turn things around on this issue in the past.
It is more than possible that He will stay the hand of parliamentarians again.
Let’s keep praying for this.
Every blessing,

Lectionary.
A new edition of the Lectionary, the book which contains the readings which are proclaimed at Mass,
will come into use in England and Wales on
the First Sunday of Advent 2024.
It will use the English Standard Version –
Catholic Edition for the scripture readings and the Psalms and Canticles for the Responsorial Psalms.
The Lectionary will use the Abbey Psalms and Canticles for text of the Responsorial Psalm.
No other edition of the Bible will be allowed for use at the Catholic liturgy of the Mass.
See link for further details.
What is the difference between the Jerusalem Bible printed about 1966 and the new English Standard Version in use from Advent 2024?
The Formal Equivalence approach is adopted by the New English Standard Version.
The Dynamic Equivalence approach is adopted by the Jerusalem Bible.
What is Formal Equivalence? Formal Equivalence Definition.
Formal equivalence, also known as word-for-word translating, is a translation methodology that focuses on translating the Biblical text with as much accuracy as possible.
To achieve this, translators strive to translate the best Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic manuscripts available as close to word-for-word as possible.
This is not 100 percent possible, as translating isn’t codebreaking.
It’s important to remember that every translation is in some way an interpretation.
Differences in language, grammar, and syntax that exist between the different languages,
as well as the very long stretch of time between the Biblical manuscripts and today, make a true 100 percent word-for-word translation nearly impossible.
The formal equivalence philosophy of translation seeks to change the original text as little as possible (minimizing human impact),
while still relaying the correct meaning.
hey are willing to encourage the reader to do some research if necessary instead of changing the text to add context or meaning.
A good Bible translation seeks to communicate the meaning of the Hebrew, Greek, or Aramaic in a way that is also readable in the modern receptor language.
What may be communicated with one word in the original language may take three words in the receptor language or vice versa.
In addition to different grammatical structures, there will also be differences in the social, cultural, and historical contexts.
Not all language is to be understood “literally” because people use similes, metaphors, and idioms that cannot be perfectly understood.
Formal Equivalence Defined
Formal equivalence is a Bible translation method that aims to translate Scripture with as much accuracy as possible.
What is Dynamic Equivalence? Dynamic Equivalence Definition
Dynamic equivalence is a Bible translation method that strives to relay the original meaning of the Scriptures using modern language
in an attempt to communicate the overall message.
Using this method, a translator would seek to reproduce the overall meaning of a passage instead of trying to create a strict word-for-word rendering of it in English.
In the dynamic equivalence translation process, the original context, culture, and idioms are considered alongside the text itself.
A pitfall of the dynamic equivalence method is that it leads to interpretive decisions
that can sometimes miss the point of the original text and introduce foreign ideas.
If the translators take too much liberty with the text, interpretive errors may prevent a faithful communication of God’s Word.
Some subjectivity naturally exists within dynamic equivalence,
allowing for widely varying versions of the same Bible verses.

Dynamic equivalence is a Bible translation method that strives to relay the original meaning of the Scriptures using modern language.

Assisted suicide debate
There will be an important debate on assisted suicide in the House of Commons
on Monday 29 April at 4.30pm.
This debate is taking place as a result of the campaign
by media personality Dame EstherRantzen
who wants a change in the law to legalise assisted suicide.
It is vital that as many MPs as possible speak up in the House
to oppose any move to make assisted suicide legal in England and Wales.
Please go to https:!/www.spuc.org.uk/livesworthliving for:
• A briefing on the case against assisted suicide
• Three video stories opposing any change in the law
• An online tool to contact your MP
Too many ‘complicating factors’ to safely implement assisted suicide, says British public in new poll
Kim Leadbeater MP is introducing a bill to introduce assisted suicide,
which will be voted on by MPs on the 29 November.
We know that assisted suicide laws in other jurisdictions have had devastating consequences for the poor, disabled and marginalised.
This is the biggest threat to the vulnerable in a decade, and we need a huge effort to lobby MPs.

Archbishop John Wilson challenges his diocese to respond.
Pope Francis reminds us,
‘Each individual Christian and every community,’
he says ‘is called to be
an instrument of God for the liberation and promotion of the poor,
and for enabling them to be fully a part of society.
This demands,’ says Pope Francis ‘that we be docile and attentive to the cry of the poor
and to come to their aid.’

Better Off Lewisham
We have launched a new tool called BetterOff Lewisham.
It is an online platform that helps residents struggling with the cost of living
find out what extra support they could be entitled to
and then supports users through claims forms and appeals.
Residents are currently signposted straight to the tool from pertinent pages of the council’s website
and can then undertake a benefits assessment to see what they’re entitled to and not already claiming.
One of the most important elements is a tool that can translate every page into 130+ different languages,
which is so crucial for a borough as diverse as Lewisham.
Since April we’ve had over 800 unique registrations for Better Off
and we’re keen to share it more widely.
Another key aspect of Better Off is the ability to grant access to a trusted helper/advisor
who can support residents through the forms if they struggle with digital tools.
Therefore, we’d like to ensure that community workers, caseworkers and other frontline staff/volunteers know about it
to help inform their conversations with the people they are supporting.
Earlier this year, Policy in Practice found that an estimated £23billion of benefits go unclaimed annually.
This tool can help residents navigate the complexity of the benefits system
and help them get the support they are entitled to.

The people of Sudan need our help urgently. We are launching an emergency appeal for donations to get aid to them on the biggest scale we can muster.
When violence broke out last year in Sudan between government and paramilitaries, most aid agencies evacuated. Now, humanitarian workers are struggling to get back into Sudan to help, meaning severe delays in getting aid to the people, and the challenges of getting into areas where fighting is still going on remain. Many borders are shut as the government say they need to keep weapons out.
But the Church and our local partners are still there. Please, stand with them today.
The situation has gone from serious to desperate very quickly. The UN is calling it ‘the world’s worst displacement crisis’. At least 8 million people have had to flee their homes; famine looms.
“At least 25 million Sudanese need immediate, emergency help. Families are already going hungry and famine is looming. This crisis threatens to become the worst in living memory.” Telley Sadia, CAFOD’s country representative for Sudan.
Let us, as Cardinal Nichols and Bishop Swarbrick wrote recently to Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, Archbishop of Juba and president of the Sudanese Bishops’ Conference,
‘extend to you the prayerful support of the Church in England and Wales and… express our solidarity with you in your current circumstances of profound distress. We have heard your cry in your recent statement, in which you reminded the international community of the need for support to bring about an end to the civil conflict and allow for immediate humanitarian access to alleviate hunger across Sudan.’
